Short for Global Positioning System, GPS is a satellite based navigation system formed by 24 satellites that orbit the Earth, making it possible for people with ground receivers to pinpoint their geographic location.  Originally developed as a military application by the U.S. Department of Defense, GPS is now available for general use throughout the world.

The transition of GPS applications from the military to civilian segment has resulted in a plethora of consumer products that have infiltrated many aspects of contemporary society.  Environmentalists, entrepreneurs, law enforcement agencies, pet owners and concerned parents have come to depend on some variation of GPS tracking systems for their personal and business needs.
